Yogi Berra and Me

One of the coolest trends i've noticed online is alot of the sports comics i worked on, people have gotten the athletes to sign the covers over the years. Alot of sites have been selling them online, when i drew this cover originally i never really thought about Yogi Berra actually signing it, how freakin' awesome is that. Here is the link to a site that is selling this great collectible, i have no idea if it's even still for sell though, sorry

1993 Yogi Berra Signed / Autographed Baseball Legends Comic Book - Yankees

1993 Yogi Berra Signed / Autographed Baseball Legends Comic Book, Printed by Revolutionary Comics. Yogi Boldly Signed the front cover in blue sharpie across his shoulder. The comic is in NM condition. The cover is firmly attached to the spine by its original staples. The Interior pages are, very clean, stiff and white, there are no rips, tears, or pen marks.

Here on the same site i found the Johnny Bench cover i drew that is also signed.

The Story of Rock-N-Roll Comics

In this special post i wanted to plug the new documentary available on dvd, The Story of Rock-N-Roll Comics, this was the first comic book company i worked for a few years back and they specialized in unauthorized biographies, I did quite a few covers for them over the years and at the time, they were hugely popular and cutting edge.

The Story Of Rock N Roll Comics

The Story of Rock N Roll Comics charts the short and controversial life of publisher Todd Loren, whose scandalous series of unauthorized comic book biographies of rock stars enraged and sometimes charmed his subjects, provoked numerous lawsuit threats from the likes of Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses and Skid Row, and eventually led to a landmark First Amendment case, all before he was savagely murdered in 1992.

This documentary mixes animation and eerie home video of Todd Loren along with interviews and commentary that reflect the range of opinions regarding his cultural legacy - Including first hand accounts from many of the artists and writers who were inspired and exploited by Loren, all peppered with insights from both the Rock & Roll and comic book communities from such luminaries as Alice Cooper, Gary Groth, Ian Shirley, Mojo Nixon and more.

The fine folks at Wild Eye Releasing did an awesome job on the graphics and packaging on this amazing dvd. Please click on the link below and get yours today......

GENE SIMMONS WEARING MY ARTWORK

One of the coolest things i got to do while working for Revolutionary Comics back in the day was design the logo for Hard Rock Comics, it was published on all their covers which was cool, but one day i was watching mtv and there was my childhood idol, Gene Simmons wearing our Hard Rock Comics logo t-shirt, man, i work in screenprinting and have designed thousands of t-shirt designs but that was the highlight of my career.
Wow, i want to just say i think Kiss is the greatest rock band ever, when i grew up before the internet, dvds and stuff like that, if you ever got the chance to actually see Kiss on tv, now that was a treat, one of my favorite memories was on the Paul Lynde's Halloween Special when he introduced them, killer show. So for me to have the demon wearing something i drew it was really special to me, he also wore it in videos and photos that promoted Kiss Alive III.

I've included some pics of gene wearing the shirt and also a picture i drew of him last year, it's just a quick marker sketch done while i was watching tv one night.

This was an old ad that was in all their comics selling the Hard Rock Comics T-shirt....

This was one of the Revolutionary Comics  Booths used at comic conventions and stuff....

In closing i just wanted to thank Kiss for all the great music and for all the fun and enjoyment i've had over the years listening to their music and watching their videos.

WHERE DOES CLIPART COME FROM?

While you're online searching for just the right piece of clipart to set your presentation off do you ever wonder where does it actually come from, i mean it's always there, no one really draws it, right? it's clipart.
Well, actually there's a few companies out there that hire artists to produce collections of clipart for them to sell on their websites, the fine folks at Digital Art Solutions hired me to produce clipart for one of their volumes of clipart, Sports & Mascots 2.
It was really cool to design clipart for them because over the years i use to use their "Smart Designs"
collections all the time. If you work in screenprinting or something and you ever need good, quality
clipart you should definitely give Digital Arts Solutions a peek. Here is their link included below and a few examples of some of the clipart i've produced for them.....

SPORTS LEGENDS PORTRAITS

One of the cool things about living in Beckley, West Virginia is the annual Coal Classic Tournament which has recently been renamed the Big Atlantic Classic, i'm the official artist for this event which i have Jim Justice to thank for which he has been truly good to me through the years. Over the years i've been honored to draw some of the biggest names to ever play sports, some of the great legends have been, Terry Bradshaw, Dr. J., Joe Theismann, Bo Jackson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Hot Rod
Hundley, Dick Vitale and West Virginia hero, Jerry West.

       WV Mountaineer Quarterback, Pat White

This is the newest one from this year's Big Atlantic Classic, Cam Newton

Included in this bog post are examples of some of the other legends i've drawn, i think my Shaq
portrait might actually be my favorite one so far.......

This was actually the second time i had the chance to do a Shaquille O'neal portrait,
the first was years ago for the cover of Sports Superstars Comics published
by Revolutionary Comics

ESPN 30 for 30: One Night In Vegas

Wow, one night i got home late and started watching a documentary on espn, 30 for 30: One Night in Vegas, it was really good then all of a sudden up pops one of my comicbook covers i did years ago for Revolutionary Comics. It was a Sports Legends cover featuring the brown bomber, Joe Louis, it was always one of my favorite covers since i was always a huge boxing fan growing up. I was so thrilled to be included in this awesome documentary

This was a very good documentary, and here is a brief description of it from one of their official sites for the show......

On the evening of Sept. 7, 1996, Mike Tyson, the WBC heavyweight champion, attempted to take Bruce Seldon’s WBA title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. At this point in his career, Tyson’s fights had become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, where the ever present hype of the professional boxing scene would come face to face with the worlds of big business, Hollywood, and hip hop. Sitting ringside was controversial rapper Tupac Shakur. Shakur and Tyson were friends, a feeling of kinship linked them as each rose to stardom from poverty only to be thrown in prison. Following Tyson’s victory, Shakur and “Iron Mike” were to celebrate at an after party, but the rap star never arrived. Shakur was brutally gunned down later that night, and the scene in Las Vegas quickly turned from would-be celebratory revelry to ill fated and inopportune tragedy. Director Reggie Bythewood, with the full cooperation of Mike Tyson, will tell not only the story of that infamous night but of the remarkable friendship between Tyson and Tupac.

POSSESSED TO SKATE

One of the coolest projects i've tried in awhile has been designing skateboards, the freedom is
incredible in that your imagination is the limit, you can create literally anything you can think
up, from vampires to skulls, as long as it's cool
All of my new designs can be found in my zazzle store online, if these happen to sell well i
would love to design a few more, it's quite cool to just design whatever happens to pop into
your mind at the time, well, i sure hope everyone finds a design they like or feel free to sug-
gest any ideas you might have for a cool board....

He's a pilot on a modern flight
See him flying through the air
If he don't land then he don't care"
